ANTIQUES IN THE ATTIC OR NEXT TO THE BED

If your bedroom furniture pieces are hand-me downs like mine are, there's something you should think about before you go selling your stuff on Craigslist: Might you have a diamond in the rough, an antique piece of furniture that could be worth some serious money? Two things that may show that you have an antique on your hands or, at the very least, a well-made piece of furniture that may be worth a pretty penny: manufacturer labels inside drawers or on the back or underside of cabinets, and solid construction.

Some furniture manufacturers have better reputations than others, so knowing who made your bedroom set or where it was from will help you determine its value and how you should price it when you sell. For example, when researching this chapter, I discovered a metal plate that read “Kling Mayville, New York” inside the top drawer of a dresser my in-laws once owned. I learned that this upstate New York furniture maker, which Ethan Allen bought in the early 1960s, went out of business about ten years ago. The cherry bedroom set I have was originally made in the late 1950s, before Ethan Allen took over. While I couldn't determine the value of the furniture itself, the drawer hardware alone is somewhat valuable. Some furniture historians will pay $5 to $15 per drawer pull from these sets. Between the one dresser and two nightstands, there are sixteen handles, or $80 to $240 in potential income. I've never been a big fan of the drawer pulls anyway, so I'm considering removing them for cash, and then replacing them with something I like more.
